8 Street painting events in 1 Year!

2 Dec

The year started out as a typical year for me, when it comes to street painting. I truly enjoy street painting, but never really got the opportunity to travel much, mostly because of finances, and just not being visible enough to be invited to other events, I usually do three, Boca, Lake Worth, and Sarasota. This year though, turned out to be a bit different.

Sugar Sand Puppet Festival, Boca Raton, FL. January 28, 2012

It began with the usual “suspects.” Boca Raton, Florida “Puppet Festival at Sugar Sand Park. A one day competition. I’m not a fan of competitions. Amongst my peers, we always ask the question, “How do you judge something like this?” but I’ll share that in another blog post. I created a “Jack-in-the-box” 4’x6′ horizontal piece. It was the 1st time in nine-teen years I didn’t finish a street painting. (The image below was from a later demonstration of the same piece.) I spent more time helping the kids, sharing with them my experiences on street painting, how to blend, not to use too much color all at once, how to keep their “squares” clean, and how to respect other’s spaces.

My friend Shane Mesmere, took away the “Best of show”….was happy to see that considering her pounce pattern didn’t work, (she forgot to sand the back side…)…Boca is a nice little show, more about the Puppets than street painting.  The “warm-up” to Lake Worth.

Lake Worth Street Painting Festival, February 25 & 26, 2012

I look forward to Lake Worth’s street painting festival more than any other. It’ where I got my start street painting almost 19 years ago. The last two years I’ve had an apprentice, nine year old Luke. He actually joined me three years ago, when his mom and my friend came to lake worth to see me. I asked if he wanted to help, and just like most nine years old, he didn’t miss the chance to draw on the street. At first I gave him a simple task of filling in background. I showed him how I wanted it done and he followed my instructions to the “T”. I invited him to join me the following year and let him pick out the “concept”. He loves airplanes, as much as I do….This past year he wanted to do a Dragon, and of course, I obliged his wishes, with my creative twist. I created a two headed dragon in the mold of Tyrannosaurus design.

Royal Palm Beach Music Festival, March 10 & 11, 2012

This is the second time I was invited to participate in this festival, but couldn’t make it last year. This was a tough one because of the weather. Both days started warm, sunny and humid. The humidity was the issue, for knowing the weather here in Florida, when it was that humid, meant there was a good chance of rain. You hold out hope that it doesn’t but, we weren’t so lucky. It rain approximately at the same time both Saturday and Sunday. Not just a “rain” but heavy down pours, from about 2 in the afternoon and on. Unfortunately, we never got to finish, and since it rained just as bad Saturday, we had to start all over on Sunday morning. The image below is as far as I got on Sunday just before the rain came.

New Paltz, NY. July 21 & 22, 2012

A 1st time event for me and the little town of New Paltz. 13 of us professional street painters descended upon this little town on the Thursday before.

This was to be a three day event, but unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans, and it rained all day on Friday.

It was a great opportunity for us artists to spend time together not street painting and we got to explore the surrounding area. The organisers were lovely people and treated us very well. Saturday and Sunday was sunny and warm. The crowds were fabulous and Harry and the Organizers were utterly thrilled with the turnout.

Victoria 1st Annual International Street Painting Festival, Victoria, B.C., Canada. September 15 & 16, 2012

I was afforded the opportunity to travel to the “Great Northwest” in September. Victoria, British Columbia, Vancouver Island. What a gorgeous place. The city was quaint and the people very nice. If you ever get the opportunity to travel there, go! If you do, I suggest you fly into Seattle and then take one of the many ferries across Peugeot Sound. The two hour boat trip is spectacular!

The weather was perfect, mid 70’s and sunny. The crowds grew and grew over the weekend, so much so, the merchants on Government Street said it was like Christmas! Good news for the event to happen again next year!

I chose a subject that would represent the area, Orca whales. I had hoped on my ferry trip across I would get the opportunity to see them in the wild, but I was not so fortunate. Maybe next year.

Cadillac ATS Augmented Reality with Tracy Lee Stum. Miami, FL September 22-25.

I was given the opportunity to work with world renown 3D Street Painter Tracy Lees Stum on this corporate project, and it was a large one at that. In fact, the largest i had ever been a part of. 40′ x 15′ x 10′ This project was designed to work with an IPAD app that allowed a video of the new ATS to ride IN the scene we painted. The scene was of the Lowe’s hair pin at the Monaco circuit. Tracy was the lead on this project and directed the work she wanted each of us to do. I was honored she invited me to work with her.

Sarasota International Street Painting Festival, Sarasota, FL., November 1-4, 2012

The Circus is in town! This years theme, honoring the Ringling Circus based there in Sarasota. I decide to create a Tiger jumping through a flaming hoop, with a twist. I wanted to make this a very “Fluid” design as the tiger transforms out of flying paint jumping through the hoop. A three day event, in which my design was simplistic enough to finish with plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the festival had to offer.

Professional Chalk Artists Festival, Vero Beach, FL. Nov 10, 2012

Another 1st time show, and my last for this year. The surface was more than rough, but as a professional street painter, we work with what is presented to us, and we do the best we can for the sake of our organizers and our reputations. I chose a tropical fish, a Mandarin Gobi, keeping with the

topical” location. It was a nice little event, and I am sure it will be bigger and better next year, which i am looking forward to.

Eight events in one year. It’s been a fantastic year, for I have met so many people and have had the privilege to have been invited to the many different beautiful locations throughout North America. I am counting my blessings. I also want to say that I enjoyed creating art for the people and making new friends, seeing old ones, and to be in the company of so many gifted artists. I hope next year is just as good, if not better.
